Sift together: 2 cups sifted plain flour (not cake flour) 1 1/2 cups regular, granulated sugar 1/2 cup regular cocoa 1 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt Add: 3 eggs 1/2 cup shortening 1 tsp. vanilla 1/2 cup cold water (that has 1 tsp. baking soda added to it) Add: 3/4 cup buttermilk or sour milk Grease pan(s) and dust with flour or sugar. Bake in a 9" x 13" pan at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes or until cake tester comes out clean. OR: Can be put in 2 round 9" cake pans, but check at 25-30 minutes and bake at same 350 degrees. Icing with the original chocolate icing Mom Wentz had on her two- layer cake (this was at least in 1952), but some favorites with our family are white or butter frosting on the confectioners box or bag.
